The best way to know if your policy covers balloon sinuplasty is to call your insurance provider and ask. Either they will tell you that it is a covered and billable service, or they will tell you that it is not covered and is an investigational procedure. After examination, our care team will be able to help decide if balloon sinuplasty or a septoplasty is the right procedure for you. Septoplasty is a procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage dividing the space between your two nostrils (nasal septum). When the septum is crooked, it is known as a deviated septum. A deviated septum makes it harder to breathe through the nose and may elevate sinus problems due to poor drainage and ventilation. During septoplasty, your nasal septum is repositioned to the middle of your nose. A crooked septum is common. However, when it's severe, a deviated septum can block one side of your nose and reduce airflow, causing difficulty breathing through one or both sides of your nose. Septoplasty straightens the nasal septum by trimming, repositioning and replacing cartilage, bone or both. Once a septoplasty is healed, you'll likely find it's easier to breathe.

If you have been diagnosed with turbinate hypertrophy, and medical treatment has failed to relieve your symptoms, you may be a candidate for a turbinate reduction. This is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of your turbinates, structures attached to the sidewalls of the nasal cavities. The goal of turbinate reduction surgery is to reduce the size of the turbinate while preserving the lining, resulting in a more open airway, enabling patients to breathe better through the nose. Turbinates cannot be removed completely because they warm and humidify inhaled air. Without turbinates, the nose would become very dry and crusty. Outfracture, coblation, and radiofrequency reduction are techniques that reduce the turbinates. Specialized instruments are utilized that allow preservation of the lining of the turbinate.
