What is Turbinate Reduction?

Turbinate reduction is a procedure in which a needle-like instrument is inserted into the turbinate and energy is transmitted to the tissue to cause controlled damage. By the time the healing process occurs, the turbinates will be reduced, allowing improved airflow through the nose.

What Are Turbinates?

Turbinates are important structures in the nasal airway that are responsible for warming and humidifying the air we breathe in. There are three turbinates on each side of the nasal cavity:

  • Superior - very small
  • Middle - usually cover the sinus drainage pathways and provide a layer of protection
  • Inferior - largest of the turbinates that do the majority of the function of the turbinates (most important)

What To Expect from a Turbinate Reduction

  • Improved sleep quality and duration
  • Fewer headache
  • Improved breathing ability
  • Clear Sinuses

A Return to Normal Nasal Breathing

Turbinate Reduction May Improve Nasal Airflow

American Sinus Institute uses The Honrubia Technique™ which combines turbinate reduction and balloon sinuplasty to eliminate all nasal issues in one visit. Through this technique, this same day procedure is performed under general general anesthesia in an office setting which allows for a more comprehensive surgery as well as a more aggressive irrigation of the sinuses.
